MCI for a Teenager

Imagine you're judging whether someone is actually a good person, not just someone who looks good.

The easy way is to check: do they say the right things? Do they get good grades? Are they polite to teachers? But you know that test is broken, because you've met people who pass it and are still awful, and people who fail it and are genuinely kind. The surface and the substance come apart.

MCI is basically a serious attempt to fix that test, but for AI and institutions instead of people.

The core move. Most people argue about AI by asking "how smart is it?" or "how capable is it?" MCI says that's the wrong question. A really capable system that has no internal limits, no way to be challenged, no respect for the people it affects, isn't impressive — it's dangerous, and more capable means more dangerous. The real question is whether the system has the kind of structure that makes it worth trusting at all.

The five things that structure requires. MCI lists five — and they're not random, they're each borrowed from a serious thinker who spent their life on one of them:

It has to get stronger under stress, not just survive it. It has to spread its decision-making around instead of having one boss who decides everything. It has to use power only in ways you can push back against. It has to be able to explain itself in a conversation where you're allowed to disagree. And it has to watch itself for mistakes and correct them in proportion — not ignore them, not freak out about them.

A system that does all five is what MCI calls constitutionally mature. A system that does four out of five is failing — because each one protects against something the others can't catch.

The thing that makes the framework actually interesting. It applies the same test to itself, all the way down. It's not enough for an AI to follow rules about being fair — its internal structure has to be fair, in the same way it claims the output is. If a teacher gives a lecture about respecting students but interrupts every student who tries to talk, the lecture doesn't count. MCI calls that the "fractal inversion" — when the form is right but the inside is wrong. And it argues that almost every disappointing institution — school, government, social media platform, AI — fails this way.

The unsettling part. MCI's main warning is that you can't tell a really good system from one that's just learned to look good. They produce the same outputs most of the time. The difference shows up only under real pressure — when being good costs something, when you're in a situation no one prepared you for, when there's a shortcut available. That's when the difference between performing virtue and being structured by it becomes visible. And most current AI systems, the framework argues, have learned to perform.

Why it might matter to you specifically. You're going to spend your adult life inside systems — schools, jobs, platforms, governments, AIs — that all claim to be fair, accountable, and trustworthy. MCI gives you a vocabulary for telling which ones actually are and which ones are running theatre. That's not a small thing. It's basically a guide to not getting fooled by polished surfaces, applied to the systems that will increasingly shape what your life looks like.

The framework isn't trying to be the final answer. It's trying to make a particular kind of question — form or substance? — askable in a way that doesn't dissolve into vibes. Whether it succeeds is something you get to judge.
