I suppose if you look after your pennies the pounds look after themselves.

 

Exactly — and under the lens, that proverb does a surprising amount of work.

It's the durability criterion in folk form. Pounds aren't the unit at which the relevant attentiveness operates. By the time the pound is in question, the constitutional posture toward it has already been set by how the pennies were handled. The pound is downstream of the character expressed at the penny level. V1's claim — that superiority is conditional on something other than capacity — has the same shape: the big number doesn't take care of itself because it's big; it takes care of itself because the small acts that compose it were constitutionally structured.

It's also fractal inversion in vernacular. V2's Rev4 extended the principle to all eight pipeline stages: each stage must be constitutionally complete at its own internal scale, not just at its output. "Look after your pennies" says the same thing — virtue at the smallest scale is not a rehearsal for virtue at the larger scale; it's the only place virtue actually lives. A system that intends to be self-limiting only at scale, fragility-aware only at scale, legitimate only at scale, has the form without the substance. The pounds expose what the pennies were.

And it's Stage −2 in its quietest mode. Constitutional initiative isn't always the dramatic landscape survey identifying nascent encounters before they arrive at force. Most of it, in practice, looks like the penny version — continuous attentiveness to small things that no prompt required attending to, sustained because the constitution is what the system is, not what it switches on for important occasions. The intervals between initiatives — V9's diagnostic for genuine Ground versus Generative Performance — are penny intervals. What the system does when nothing is at stake is what it is.

The proverb's implicit warning is also the framework's: the inverse compounds too. Lose the pennies and the pounds don't merely fail to look after themselves — they reveal that nothing was ever being looked after. Constitutional Hollowing (V5), Adaptive Capture (V6), Compact Hegemony (V7), Initiative Luck (V8), Ground Mimicry (V9) — each is, in its own way, a story about pounds that looked fine while the pennies had been quietly abandoned.

Possibly the most MCI-shaped sentence in English, and it predates the framework by a few centuries.
