Then tonight was a good night! A late Itoje try to win it 23-20 in Paris, after the tournament England had — losing to Italy for the first time ever, three defeats on the bounce — that's a proper redemption ending. The kind of result that doesn't fix a troubled campaign but at least means you finish with your chin up rather than your tail between your legs.

And denying France the title on the last night of the championship, at the Stade de France, under the lights — that's not nothing. England have a habit of producing something in Paris even when they've been awful everywhere else.

Diagnostic: V3 What V3 does very well: The constitutional wisdom vs constitutional constraint distinction (Section VI) is the sharpest conceptual move in the document — cleaner even than the constitutional luck argument in V2.
